Geography

Intent

At Egerton Primary, our Geography curriculum is designed to inspire a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We aim to help pupils unravel the mysteries of our fast-changing, interconnected, and interdependent world. By exploring diverse places, cultures, resources, and environments, our curriculum enables children to understand both the Earth's physical landscapes and human processes. As they progress, pupils develop a deeper comprehension of how physical and human processes interact, shaping landscapes and influencing the use of environments.
We are proud to be an Expert Centre for the Global Learning Programme (GLP),water geograpy.JPG which gives our pupils an accurate worldview. Through our partnerships with a sister school in Kenya and another in Spain, our students gain real-world learning opportunities, broadening their global perspective. Our approach to Geography promotes a strong focus on global learning and understanding, enabling children to appreciate the interconnectedness of the world they live in.

Implementation

Our Geography curriculum is carefully structured to provide a rich and varied learning experience across all year groups. Each class focuses on a different continent, allowing pupils to explore both global and local geography as they build their knowledge and skills year by year:

EYFS: Focus on Antarctica, introducing the concept of extreme environments

Year 1: Explore the geography of Africa, focusing on Kenya.

Year 2: Study Australia and Oceania, learning about unique landscapes and cultures.

Year 3: Focus on Europe, delving into the continent's geography, cultures, and physical features.

Year 4: Explore Asia, learning about the diverse climates, landscapes, and population centres.

Year 5: Study North America, focusing on both human and physical geography, including urbanization and natural wonders.

Year 6: Investigate South America, Brazil, Rio and the Amazon Rainforest.

Our curriculum ensures pupils develop key geographical skills, such as map reading, fieldwork, and data collection. These skills serve as the 'tools of the trade' for geographers and are essential for collecting, analyzing, and displaying geographical information.

Throughout their time at Egerton, pupils will explore how the Earth's features at different scales are shaped, interconnected, and change over time. By grounding learning in both global and local contexts, our curriculum equips students with the geographical knowledge and understanding to navigate and appreciate the world around them.

Below, you will find the 'Curriculum and Outcomes' document attached for this subject.

This document lists how the objectives of the National Curriculum are covered throughout each year group and each half-term. You will also find an overview of the subject areas covered and the key outcomes expected for each child to be considered working at the expected standard.

Alongside this document, staff utilise the vocabulary and skills progression created by subject leaders during their planning and assessment. These progression documents are in place to ensure that all learning is differentiated appropriately, builds upon previous years and leads into the next, and fully covers the National Curriculum and beyond.
