Year 1 2024 - 2025
Mrs Allott
My Town. My School. My Road.
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful Summer break and are excited for the new school year. We have lots of engaging activities and learning planned! The first theme of Year 1 is My Town, My School, My Road.
History
Our theme gives us the opportunity to explore the History of Knutsford, Egerton Primary, Tatton and Lord Egerton. By the end of the half term, children should be able to:
- say when their house was built
- order houses by age based on observations
- identify the year in which our school was built
- explain who Wilbraham and Maurice Egerton were
- discuss the history of Tatton Park
- explain what life was like at Tatton Mansion for the Egerton family and the servants
-
make comparisons to life at Tatton 100 years ago and life there now
To support this learning, we will be spending the day at the mansion of Tatton Park for a Victorian workshop.
Our enquiry questions are:
- When was my house built and why is it important to my town?
- When was my school built and who created it?
- Why is Tatton Park important to my town?
- What was it like living and working in Tatton Park?
- What makes Knutsford a special place to live?
Class novel and Pathways to Write text
In English, the Year 1 children will enhance their writing and grammar skills through the story of "Meesha Makes Friends" by Tom Percival. Through activities linked to the text writing speech bubbles, a diary entry and poem, the children will build on their skills from Reception to achieve this half term's mastery keys. At the end of the half term they will produce a recount of the story to evidence their ability to combine words to form sentences, use finger spaces between words, use a capital letter and full stop and also use a capital letter for names and the personal pronoun 'I'.
Children's rights and SDGs
This Autumn, Year 1 children will be learning about children's rights, focusing on Rights 12 and 28. Right 12 emphasizes a child's right to an opinion and have it listened to which links well to one of our objectives in PSHE Jigsaw as they know their views are valued and can contribute to the Learning Charter. Right 28 focuses on a child's right to education. We will also explore right 27 through our History and Geography lessons on our local area.
Additionally, children will explore Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which focuses on good health and wellbeing.
PSHE Jigsaw
In the Autumn term, Year 1 will focus on the PSHE Jigsaw unit "Being Me in the World.". As part of this, they will identify their rights and responsibilities as a member of the class, recognise the choices they make and understand the consequences and learn how to use their Jigsaw journal to demonstrate these skills.
Please see our curriculum map below to find out what other exciting concepts we will be exploring this half term.
